Frank Lampard’s faith in Mason Mount explained after Chelsea star continues in starting XI

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy has backed Chelsea star Mason Mount to continue being a key player for his club and England this season.

After a breakthrough season on loan at Derby with Lampard as his boss, both were back at Stamford Bridge at the start of last season.

And Lampard put considerable faith in Mount, playing him regularly in midfield and he later earned his first cap for the England national team.

But with Chelsea’s transfer ban over in the summer, the club made significant additions across the team, especially in the midfield area occupied by Mount.

Despite the increased competition from the likes of Hakim Ziyech and Kai Havertz, Mount shone for Chelsea in their 3-0 win over Burnley on Saturday and Murphy was impressed with what he saw.

“He’s growing all the time in confidence,” Murphy said on Match of the Day.

“He’s brilliant in the centre of the pitch, they played Kante holding with Mount and Havertz ahead – a bit like Man City used to do with David Silva and Kevin De Bruyne ahead of Fernandinho.
