Frank Lampard’s Chelsea formation and future set-up decided thanks to Kai Havertz

Frank Lampard has hinted that he will stick to a 4-3-3 formation at Chelsea, for now.

The former Derby boss is keen to see clear progression from his first season as manager at Stamford Bridge, and their summer spend of £200m has given him the tools he needs.

One major summer arrival was Kai Havertz from Bayer Leverkusen, who has already played in three slightly different positions across his first 10 appearances in all competitions.

However, having impressed in a joint No8 role with Mason Mount in the 3-0 win over Burnley, Lampard has hinted that he will favour the system he used for most of last season going forward.

He said: ”It is a real plus when someone comes in and says they are happy to play in a number of positions.

“He can play as a No10 or out wide, which he played in previously for club and country before coming here.

“I know he has played as a No8 too, so that was part of the process for me, him and the team to find the best way.

“It is very normal when you miss pre-season and you are looking for those tweaks in formation at the start of the season.

“Now, we are playing in a slightly different way and there have been a number of positives.

“That doesn’t mean that we can’t change back.”

Chelsea take on Rennes on Wednesday as they look to build on their Champions League win over Krasnodar, and Lampard is keen for his team to keep a fifth clean sheet in a row.
