Chelsea added a lot of very good players to their squad this summer, but a lot of the added value this season has come from the players they already had stepping their game up.
Kurt Zouma, who looked dreadful at times last season alongside Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, looks immense playing alongside new man Thiago Silva, for example.

So impressive has he been in these early weeks of the season that it’s no surprise to hear that the club are ready to offer him a new contract.
Fabrizio Romano reported that on his podcast this week, and we’re not at all surprised to hear it. There was serious interest in the defender from other clubs this summer, and now he’s established himself as the top quality defender we always knew he was, it’s important to lock him up long term.
Silva won’t be around forever, and we will need Zouma to take over as the dominant player once the Brazilian goes.
