Rice gives verdict on ‘harsh’ criticism of Mount
Declan Rice has made clear his view on the debate surrounding Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.
There have been suggestions that England manager Gareth Southgate must choose which of the two players he prefers, with calls for Grealish to start over Mount despite the latter’s strong form for the Blues .
But both featured in the same team in a friendly win over the Republic of Ireland on Thursday night.
“I think it’s very harsh,” said West Ham and England midfielder Rice, quoted by the Metro .
“I witnessed it here when I came to train here. I trained with him since I was a kid and I know what his mentality is like. I know how hard he works and how driven it is and it’s no surprise that Gareth picks him, that Frank [Lampard] picks him.

“I think if you give every Premier League manager the chance to pick him they would pick him because if you see him day in and day out and what he gives to the team and as an individual, he’s a top talent. I definitely think the criticism is very harsh.”
Former Arsenal striker backs Mount after ‘unfair’ comments
Ian Wright has leaped to the defence of Mason Mount after his inclusion in the England setup was questioned.
The Chelsea midfielder started in last month’s Nations League games against Belgium and Denmark, with some supporters calling for Jack Grealish to take his place.
But ex-Arsenal striker Wright has bemoaned the “disgraceful” criticism of the 22-year-old.
“It’s disgraceful the way people have talked about Mason Mount getting his berth in front of whoever,” Wright told ITV Sport, as quoted by talkSPORT.
