Former Chelsea winger Joe Cole believes both Roman Abramovich and Frank Lampard deserve the credit for the Blues’ bright start to the season.
Lampard and his men have enjoyed a fine start to the campaign, moving top with a 2-0 away win over Newcastle United on Saturday, though, that’s before the rest of the league had the chance to respond.
Chelsea spent significantly in the summer and seem to be reaping the rewards as they put together what they hope will be a title-challenging campaign.
But while the new signings have clearly played a big part, former wide man Cole believes much of the credit should go to Lampard and owner Abramovich for trusting his young manager.

“They’ve looked so good. We’ve sung the praises of Thiago Silva and Reece James, but everyone’s scoring in the forward positions. It’s just a very steady ship at the moment,” said Cole on BT Sport before the Newcastle game.
“Frank has to take a lot of credit for that. The ownership has to take a lot of credit for that for sticking by Frank, just giving him the money to spend.
“In that first season, he did a great job, bringing in the youngsters, blooding them, bringing stability and he’s now added the quality of Ziyech and Havertz.
“Chelsea now look a real threat, I don’t think people will be wrong by saying Chelsea will be in for a shout of it come the end of the season. There’s so much quality going all the way through the team now.”
Speaking about the new signings and how they have been bedded in, Cole added: “I looked at the pieces put together, and I hoped. I hoped Thiago Silva was the player we remembered, he is. Chilwell, I hoped he settled in well – he has done, he’s been brilliant.
