Frank Lampard has admitted that he hopes to have Kai Havertz as part of his Chelsea squad for Tuesday’s Champions League game away at Rennes.
Missing from the squad against the French team prior to the international break after having to self-isolate following a positive Covid-19 test, the summer signing was once again absent at the weekend at Newcastle United.
While Lampard would have liked to include the youngster in his squad at St James’ Park, he wasn’t needed as a Federico Fernandez own goal and Tammy Abraham’s strike sealed a 2-0 win.
Havertz has been back at Cobham over the past few days to build up his fitness and the head coach has revealed that the German is in “good shape” ahead of their trip to France.

“I hope he is available he’s been in for two or three days training doing some individual work and he looks pretty good,” admitted the club’s all-time top goalscorer.
“Kai is a naturally fit boy. I hope to have him travelling with us to Rennes on Tuesday. Maybe get some minutes.
“I’m not sure how many because it was two-week isolation but he looks in good shape.”
The Champions League game will give Lampard the chance to shuffle things about ahead of Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash against Tottenham.
The 42-year-old has a big squad available to him after the club’s summer transfer business and there’s a very good chance he will make a few changes here and there to ensure his player remain fresh for the London derby.
Given the amount of minutes some players have played recently after coming back from the international break, Lampard has stated that his team selection will depend on how his squad recover from the win on Tyneside.
