Frank Lampard provides Kai Havertz fitness update as he opens up on his Chelsea plans vs Rennes

Frank Lampard has admitted that he hopes to have Kai Havertz as part of his Chelsea squad for Tuesday’s Champions League game away at Rennes.

Missing from the squad against the French team prior to the international break after having to self-isolate following a positive Covid-19 test, the summer signing was once again absent at the weekend at Newcastle United.

While Lampard would have liked to include the youngster in his squad at St James’ Park, he wasn’t needed as a Federico Fernandez own goal and Tammy Abraham’s strike sealed a 2-0 win.

Havertz has been back at Cobham over the past few days to build up his fitness and the head coach has revealed that the German is in “good shape” ahead of their trip to France.

“I’m not sure how many because it was two-week isolation but he looks in good shape.”

The Champions League game will give Lampard the chance to shuffle things about ahead of Sunday’s crunch Premier League clash against Tottenham.
