Chelsea players have been paying tribute to footballing legend Diego Maradona.

Maradona passed away today, aged 60, after suffering cardiac arrest just weeks after having successful surgery on a brain blood clot.

The Argentine FA confirmed in a statement its “deepest sorrow for the death of our legend,” adding: You will always be in our hearts.”

Alberto Fernandez, the president of Argentina, added: “You took us to the top of the world. You made us immensely happy. You were the greatest of them all. Thank you for having existed, Diego. We’re going to miss you all our lives.”

Ben Chilwell wrote: “The best, such sad news. Rest in peace, legend.” Meanwhile, Antonio Rudiger, who met the Argentinian icon at the Confederations Cup final in Russia in 2017, added: “The world of sport has lost one of the greatest. Rest in peace, Diego Maradona.”

Maradona will be remembered as a true great of the game with his greatest achievement on the pitch being his and Argentina’s World Cup-winning campaign of 1986.

During his club career, the former attacking midfielder played for Boca Juniors, Barcelona, Sevilla and Napoli among others, winning two Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup along with other silverware.

He retired as a player in 1997 two years after returning to Boca Juniors but would go on to become a manager.
