Declan Rice to get dream Chelsea shirt number if Marina Granovskaia seals £80m transfer

Chelsea could be busy in the January transfer window.

Despite splashing over £200m in the summer, Frank Lampard is being tipped to bolster his squad even further and the latest name linked with a move to Stamford Bridge is that of West Ham United star Declan Rice.

According to a recent report from The Athletic, Rice has changed agents and is now represented by his father Sean, who is a Chelsea season ticket holder.

In addition, the report states that an £80m transfer is more likely in the summer rather than January and this scenario would see the 21-year-old return to his boyhood club after being released as a youngster.

If Rice was to join the Blues, supporters will be looking forward to seeing the England international holding the Chelsea shirt at his unveiling – but what squad number could the midfielder take at Stamford Bridge?

Well, it would appear that Rice has two favoured options.

He’s worn no.41 for West Ham ever since breaking into the first-team picture, but for the national team he wore no.5 and no.8 during the most recent international break.

At Chelsea, the incumbent no.5 and 8 are Jorginho and Ross Barkley respectively. Although, technically the latter shirt number is currently free as the England international is spending the season on loan at Aston Villa and his long-term future hasn’t yet been sorted.

However, Rice would have better luck with the no.41 shirt as it’s a squad number that is not usually worn by a first-team player at Chelsea.
