Chelsea midfielder delivers verdict on Frank Lampard sacking with Instagram message

Danny Drinkwater has delivered his verdict on Chelsea’s decision to sack Frank Lampard.

Lampard has been relieved of his duties at Stamford Bridge less than 24 hours after their 3-1 FA Cup fourth round victory over Luton Town.

An announcement was made on Monday morning with a statement insisting the decision was not taken lightly by the board and owner Roman Abramovich.

As expected, there has been a hush around the Chelsea squad as many awaited official confirmation of Lampard’s departure.

However, Drinkwater is the exception.

Well, technically the midfielder isn’t part of the Blues squad at the moment after he joined Kasimpasa on loan for the rest of the season.

Drinkwater hasn’t made a first-team appearance for Chelsea in more than two years and is out of contract in west London at the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

Furthermore, he wasn’t even allocated a squad number by Lampard at the beginning of the season.

With that said, Drinkwater’s social media activity appeared to have indicated his feelings regarding Lampard’s imminent exit from Stamford Bridge.

As seen in the Instagram post above, the midfielder uploaded an image of him celebrating shortly after the Lampard news broke.

This prompted talk that Drinkwater was happy with the decision, but it turns out his post was merely a coincidence.

“Thought that was a bit of a strange reaction,” he wrote. “Didn’t hear about the news before I posted that.

“I was just missing playing.

“The manager was somebody I looked up to hugely as a player.”
