When Chelsea’s squad discovered Frank Lampard’s tenure had been brought to an end

It wasn’t until this morning that Chelsea’s first-team squad discovered Frank Lampard’s tenure as head coach had been brought to an end, understands.

The Blues have been on a wretched run of form in the Premier League and currently sit ninth in the table. That unsurprisingly had ramped up the pressure on Lampard.

Yet after yesterday’s 3-1 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup, the Chelsea head coach was in good spirits.

He spoke about how the victory could create an air of positivity around the club ahead of a must-win fixture against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday evening.

In preparation for that game, Chelsea’s players were set to report at Cobham this morning. A training session was scheduled to take place at 10.30am.

However, a text was sent to the first-team players this morning by the club informing them that the session had been pushed back until 2pm. The reason why soon became apparent.

The decision to sack Lampard – a club legend – is not one Chelsea have taken lightly; it’s why the rare step was taken for Roman Abramovich to comment on the dismissal.
