Chelsea fans noticed what Kai Havertz did in Thomas Tuchel’s first game as manager

Thomas Tuchel didn’t get the win he would have wanted during his first game as Chelsea manager against Wolves on Wednesday evening.

However, some Blues fans have spotted one major positive from the goalless draw.

Having been appointed as Frank Lampard’s successor on Tuesday evening, Tuchel had just one training session before making a decision on what team to pick at Stamford Bridge.

And his pick prompted a massive response from not only Chelsea fans, but BT Sport pundits Rio Ferdinand and Peter Crouch too as the latter was surprised at Mason Mount’s omission.

“It’s definitely a change of identity,” Crouch said. “I felt like Frank brought the identity back at Chelsea – clear plan, bringing the youth through, whether that plan is gonna come to fruition now because he’s picked some experienced players there and the fact that he’s dropped Mason Mount and Reece James – who, in Frank’s tenure were two of the best players.

“Certainly, Mount, who has created more chances than any other Chelsea player, how must he feel now?”

Mount’s absence afforded big-money signing Kai Havertz a chance to impress the new manager and he played the entire 90 minutes in a more advanced attacking midfield role.

Tuchel’s decision almost paid off in second-half injury time as the Germany international’s header looked destined for the net, only for a deflection to take his effort over the bar.

With that said, it would appear that some Blues fans were encouraged by Havertz’s overall performance.
