Billy Gilmour has been linked with a move to Southampton in the Daily Mail this evening.
Even in Thomas Tuchel’s first week as manager it’s become clear that the youngster is not going to be involved much, with Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic clearly returning to the front of the queue. Gilmour didn’t make the squad for either game. His showing against Luton before that was so positive it looked certain he’d get a chance with Frank Lampard in charge, but that’s suddenly forgotten now.
On the plus side, Southampton seems just about the perfect loan move – they’ve got enough quality to help him out and a good manager to improve him, but there should be plenty of opportunities for him to play too.
On the other hand, he was so close to breaking into the first team at Chelsea, it’s a shame to see him take a step back. Let’s hope he really shines and can be reintegrated next summer.
