Thomas Tuchel’s comments on Marcos Alonso may explain Ben Chilwell Chelsea snub

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel has outlined his reasons for starting Marcos Alonso over Ben Chilwell.

The Spain international has been brought in from the cold since Frank Lampard was dismissed, starting against both Burnley and Tottenham in the Premier League this week.

Although the decision to drop Chilwell following Tuchel’s opening game as Blues boss against Wolves, the German coach has insisted that Alonso offers something that the Englishman might not.

Tuchel spoke to the media before his side travelled across London to take on Tottenham, and his comments suggested that Chilwell would once again be left on the bench.

“It was very important that he could step up like this,” said Tuchel of Alonso.

“I had the feeling he was still mentally strong, that the position suits him very well and he is experienced enough to do it.

“He’s a bit more used to the position than Ben Chilwell, whom I like a lot.

“Chilly is a great player and I’m happy to have him in the team but [against Burnley] it was about the size of Marcos, his ability to help us in defensive set-pieces and also his goal threat.
