Chelsea academy ace Lewis Bate tipped to follow in footsteps of Mount and Gilmour

Lewis Bate could earn his Chelsea debut against Barnsley in the FA Cup having been tipped to follow in the footsteps of Mason Mount and Billy Gilmour.

The pair have shone in the Blues first-team having graduated from the Stamford Bridge academy in recent years.

Bate has been drafted into Thomas Tuchel’s squad for Thursday’s FA Cup fifth round tie at Championship outfit Barnsley.

It’s not the first time the 18-year-old has been involved with the first-team having already appeared twice on the bench.

Bate joined Chelsea at the age of eight and was captain of the U15 side that won the Floodlight Cup.

He has impressed in the U23s side side this campaign with Chelsea riding high in Premier League 2.

Bate was named PL2 Player of the Month for December having been a standout in the 6-1 demolition of Manchester United.

His rise through the ranks means he could go on to feature for Chelsea for many years with The Athletic reporting that Bate has wowed Cesar Azpilicueta and Olivier Giroud in first-team training.

On the clash with Barnsley, Thomas Tuchel said: “The FA Cup is one of the most prestigious cups in the world, is played in Wembley.

“Even if you’re a little boy in Germany with no internet at that time and no sports channels where you can watch every game like nowadays, for sure you know the word Wembley and the words FA Cup.
