Thiago Silva may not be able to play Atletico Madrid after picking up an injury against Tottenham last week, according to The Athletic.
They write that Chelsea are pushing for the Brazilian to be back on the 20th, when we play Southampton.
That’s just 10 days away, and the Atletico game comes 3 days after that. Even if he is fit to face the Saints, there are other risks in playing him just a few days later.
His strain against Spurs didn’t look too serious, but it’s a reminder that we’re really pushing him to his limits. The Atletico game is huge, and we’re desperate to have him back – but if it came down to a decision between that and the league game the weekend before, there would be a real dilemma.
Andreas Christensen has stepped in capably so far, but there’s no doubting how important it feels to have our impressive summer signing back for our European ties.
