Atletico Madrid dealt huge injury blow ahead of Chelsea Champions League clash

Atletico Madrid have been dealt a huge blow ahead of their Champions League Round of 16 clash with Chelsea.

Chelsea will face the La Liga table-toppers in Bucharest due to coronavirus regulations in Spain preventing the arrival of UK flights.

And ahead of the game, the Blues’ Spanish counterparts have been dealt an almighty blow in the form of an injury to one of their key players.

As reported by Marca, Atletico Madrid will be without starting centre-back Jose Maria Gimenez for the clash with Chelsea in Romania, in what could also be a blow in their bid to lift the La Liga title this season.

Gimenez has struggled with injury this season, missing a large chunk of the season due to a thigh injury, and he will now miss up to another three weeks.

That means he will miss the first leg with Chelsea on February 23, though he is scheduled to return well ahead of the second leg with plenty of time between the two games.

The second leg, at Stamford Bridge, will not take place until March 17, giving the Uruguayan defender plenty of time to get back to fitness and up to speed.

Just weeks ago, Chelsea will have been forgiven for looking at the Atletico clash with a degree of trepidation having slumped into a sorry run of form.
