Good evening and welcome along to live coverage of Thomas Tuchel’s post-match press conference following Chelsea’s dogged and determined 1-0 victory in their first leg of their tie with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.
The head coach made four changes to the team that started the draw with Southampton for the European clash in Bucharest with Callum Hudson-Odoi, Andreas Christensen, Jorginho and Olivier Giroud all coming into the starting eleven.
The first half went pretty much as most had predicted it would be, Chelsea dominating the ball and Atletico defending stoutly so it was no surprise the game was locked at 0-0 at the break.
Timo Werner went closest for Chelsea, forcing a decent save from Jan Oblak from a tight angle but within 35 seconds of the kick off, the Blues were dealt a blow ahead of the second leg.
Mason Mount brought down Joao Felix as he raced through from midfield and the Blues star was booked for his troubles, picking up his third yellow card of the competition and meaning he will miss the second leg at Stamford Bridge next month
The second half was much of the same with the Blues completing almost three times the passes of their opponents.
But a moment of outstanding quality broke the deadlock and it came from Olivier Giroud, who executed a superb bicycle kick to give Chelsea the lead. After a near three-minute VAR check for offside, the goal was eventually given after it was deemed the ball had flicked off an Atleti defender.
The Blues will also be without Jorginho for the second leg in London as he too picked up a booking in the second half of the contest, his third and will join Mount in the stands for the return game.
The Blues hung on to take a precious lead back to Stamford Bridge for the second leg next month as Tuchel continued his unbeaten run as head coach and picked up by far his biggest result so far.
We will be hearing from Tuchel shortly and you can follow what he has to say via the live…
