Marcel Desailly disagrees with Thomas Tuchel over Hakim Ziyech display in Chelsea vs Atletico

Hakim Ziyech has been criticised again despite scoring for Chelsea in their win over Atletico Madrid.

Ziyech hasn’t exactly hit the ground running since his £36million transfer from Ajax in the summer, only managing three goals and four assists to date.

But fans were left delighted on Wednesday night when he scored the opener for Chelsea in their 2-0 second leg win over Atletico Madrid in the Champions League.

Summer signings Kai Havertz, Timo Werner and Ziyech all combined to put the Blues ahead on the night and to double their lead on aggregate in what was seen as a big moment for all three players given they have all been criticised since their arrival.

But despite that goal, Ziyech was still criticised by one pundit after the game with former Chelsea star Marcel Desailly believing the Moroccan has improvements to make.

“When you look at the performance of Ziyech, I really don’t think his performance was magnificent,” Desailly told beIN Sports.

“He missed a lot of crosses. He wasn’t very effective in dribbling.

“But the collective and the spirit brought Chelsea collectively to a different level, in possession of the ball and how they played.”

Head coach Tuchel disagreed, saying: “He played today because he did it with Ajax and he came to a semi-final. He has good experience in the Round of 16, he knows how it feels to arrive in the knockout round and go through to the last eight.

“The second reason he played is because he deserved it and the third is we missed Mason Mount and we wanted to replace his work-rare and intensity with Hakim because we knew we faced a midfield of three with a lot of quality.
