Chelsea’s Kai Havertz compared to Man Utd icon that labelled transfer ‘crazy’

Chelsea star Kai Havertz has been compared to former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker Dimitar Berbatov.

Havertz joined the Blues last summer for a club record transfer fee but he struggled to make an immediate impact.

However, he has improved under new boss Thomas Tuchel and former United defender Rio Ferdinand has likened Havertz to Berbatov.

Speaking on BT Sport, Ferdinand said: “He reminds me of Berbatov, a player I played with at Manchester United. He’s got that little lazy swagger at times where you feel like he’s got a bit of nonchalance about him, the guy is so smooth.

“Joe made the point before the game, the game kind of doesn’t quicken up around him at all. The game slows down to his pace, he gets things done really elegantly, his touch is always exquisite.

“I think he’s going to grow into a really important player, a player that showcases his talents in a way that not many others can.”

Former Chelsea star Joe Cole agreed with Ferdinand’s assessment, adding: “I think he’s Berbatov, with a yard [of pace].”

Berbatov has previously said he is a “big fan” of Havertz, but he feels the fee that the Chelsea paid to sign him was “ridiculous” and “crazy”.

Speaking to Betfair, Berbatov said: “I think the amount of money Chelsea spent on Kai Havertz was a little too much for my taste. It’s ridiculous, it’s too much money.

“Havertz is a great talent, and I have said that in the past, I am a big fan of his and with my Leverkusen connection I was keeping a keen eye on him every week, but still the money that they have paid is crazy.
