The 2021 Champions League final has been plunged into chaos this afternoon as the British Government has announced Turkey has been placed on its red list for travel.
Turkey is currently in full lockdown due to a second wave of Covid-19 – there were 26,476 positive cases reported yesterday. Yet earlier this week UEFA stated the Champions League final on May 29 would still be played at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium.
However, the decision taken today by the Government may change that as anyone visiting the country, including elite sportsmen, will now have to quarantine in a hotel upon their return to the UK at a cost of £1750.
UEFA had been expecting 4000 fans from each team to travel to the final at the Ataturk Olympic Stadium but that is no highly unlikely to be the case. Football.London understands that UEFA are “very unhappy” at the Government’s decision.
There will be plenty of reaction to the breaking news and we’ll have it all covered in our live blog below.
