Chelsea could be about to repeat a trick they pulled off with Olivier Giroud in a bid to increase their earnings this summer.
Last week, the Blues surprised many when they extended Olivier Giroud’s contract by one year, activating an option they held in his contract.
They did that in order to avoid losing the Frenchman for free this summer when he is expected to leave, though it’s reported they could come to a compromise if Giroud does want to leave.
Chelsea are smart in inserting such clauses in their players’ contracts, keen to make money from outgoings, even if it is players they no longer want.

And that could be the case when it comes to full-back Emerson Palmieri, who is expected to leave the club this summer after another season of reduced opportunities behind Ben Chilwell and Marcos Alonso.
Though, Chelsea are facing the prospect of having to accept a reduced fee for Emerson given his current contract is set to expire in the summer of next year.
With that in mind, CalcioMercato report the Blues and Marina Granovskaia could opt to tack another year on the end of Emerson’s deal in order to receive an improved fee for him.
Though, it is often the case that the extra year can only be activated within the final year of the deal, meaning Chelsea may have to wait until after June 30 to make that decision.
