Euro2020 around the corner
With Euro 2020 kicking off this evening, 101 sat down with ex-Liverpool defender Jose Enrique to talk all things Spain, including their chances this summer, the exclusion of captain Sergio Ramos, and their striker situation.
Luis Enrique opted for a 24 man squad despite the regulations allowing him to take 26 to the competition, which kicks off with Italy vs Turkey this evening. While his decision to overlook National team captain Sergio Ramos took the headlines, there was also a surprise exclusion for Iago Aspas, who contributed 14 goals and 13 assists in La Liga across 2020-21.
Spain’s Striker options
As a result of the 33-year-old not going to the tournament, Spain’s only orthodox strikers in the squad are Alvaro Morata and Villareal’s Gerard Moreno, although the latter has also played a lot of his career on the right-wing.
It remains unclear which of these two will start, so we quizzed Jose Enrique on the pair of them.
Asking the ex-Liverpool defender about Morata, Enrique said:
“He’s a player that is very very experienced. I believe that with all the tournaments that he has played this is probably the most important for him, to show himself, because he’s been at Real Madrid, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, and obviously Juventus again.
He’s a player that has proved himself in the past, but he’s a player that has to show why he’s been in these teams.
What about THIS @AlvaroMorata’s touch?! 🤩👀@juventusfcen

Then he has competition as well, don’t get me wrong. Gerard Moreno, the striker from Villareal, is a really really good player.
I’m not sure if he [Luis Enrique] is going to play with both of them or if he’s going to play with just one. If he plays with one, I’m not even sure it’s going to be the main one, Alvaro…
