Thomas Tuchel picks former Chelsea star to play in his ultimate 90s legends team

Thomas Tuchel has built a formidable defensive team at Chelsea since he took over from Frank Lampard as head coach at the end of January.

Built on a solid back five that shipped just 18 goals in 30 games since he took over, Tuchel took the Blues to a fourth place finish in the Premier League and then the biggest prize in club football – the Champions League trophy.

That saw the German handed a two-year extension to the 18-month deal he signed when he replaced Lampard earlier this year, tying him down in west London until 2023.

But, of course, there was plenty of history at Chelsea before Tuchel arrived at the club and also before Roman Abramovich changed the face of football when he bought the club in 2003.

“Desailly – he’s Desailly. I worked two and a half years in France, so I know,” Tuchel said with a smile and that was it.

Desailly joined Chelsea in 1998 for just under £5million from AC Milan, forming a formidable centre back partnership with Frank LeBoeuf.

Desailly picked up one major trophy during his stay in west London, the FA Cup triumph in 2000 over Aston Villa at Wembley, before leaving the club in 2004.

Desailly was partnered in defence by Ronal Koeman, with Roberto Carlos and Javier Zanetti as his full backs.
