Wijnaldum snubbed Barca to win UCL

After months of it looking like Gini Wijnaldum would be heading to Barcelona, PSG stole a march on the Spanish club to announce the deal.

The Dutch midfielder helped Liverpool reach the top 4 after it had looked very unlikely to happen. However he still decided to leave the Reds at the end of the season with his contract expiring.

Fabrizio Romano reported that Barcelona were ‘here we go’ for the deal with a ‘verbal agreement’ in place.

The verbal agreement has been reached, Wijnaldum is joining Barça until June 2024. He’s expected to sign his contract in the next few days – work in progress to complete the deal reducing Gini’s salary. ⏳

However, the Dutchman would go onto sign for PSG on what was expected to be a larger salary.

Paris Saint-Germain have officially confirmed the signing of Gini Wijnaldum on a free transfer.

Wijnaldum referenced winning the Champions League when he signed, throwing into doubt the perception of players in Barca’s capacity to do the same.

“Hopefully my help can help the team win the Champions League, that would be great,” Wijnaldum said. “But not only the Champions League, it’s also about the league and the Cup. You just want to win as much as possible for the club and the supporters.”

Depay deal in jeopardy

After failing to secure a deal for Wijnaldum, the club have stepped up efforts for departing Lyon forward Memphis Depay.
